How removalist pricing works
Most local moves in Australia are charged by time for a stated truck and crew. The parts of a quote to understand are the rate, the billing increment, the minimum booking, when chargeable time starts and stops, and any separate charges that sit outside the hourly rate.
How Top Movers charges
Top Movers lists local Adelaide moving options from $60 per half-hour. The truck, crew and applicable rate are confirmed in the written quote. Specific truck-and-crew options are priced separately—for example, a 4.5-tonne truck with two movers is $60 per half-hour. The option that suits your move is confirmed in writing before you book. The current terms that apply to hourly services are:
- Hourly services generally have a two-hour minimum.
- Chargeable moving time begins when the team arrives at the pickup address, not when the truck leaves the depot.
- Where a call-out charge applies, it is shown separately in the quote. It contributes to travel, fuel, vehicle costs and mobilisation.
- For local Adelaide moves there is no base-to-base charge and no separate fuel levy. That means you are not billed hourly for the truck’s travel to and from the depot and no separate charge labelled as a fuel levy applies; it does not mean a disclosed call-out charge can never apply. Any call-out charge is stated in the written quote before you accept it.
- There is no additional weekend surcharge on local Adelaide moves.
- Free basic furniture dismantling and reassembly where standard tools are suitable.

How an hourly quote adds up
Whatever the company, an hourly quote works out the same way:
Billable time × quoted rate + quoted call-out charge and other agreed charges = estimated total.
Billable time is subject to the billing increment and the minimum booking, and it starts wherever the quote says the clock starts. The hourly figure alone tells you very little; the increment, the minimum, the start point of the clock and any separate charges decide the total.
Hourly rate or fixed quote?
Hourly pricing suits a local move with a known item list and straightforward access; you pay for the time used, subject to the minimum. A fixed quote suits long-distance and high-volume moves, or complex access, where certainty matters more. Neither is automatically cheaper. A fixed quote should state its assumptions and explain what would change the price, such as extra items or a lift that is unavailable on the day.
What changes the price
Volume
The amount of furniture and boxes sets the truck size, the loading time and whether the move fits in one trip. Count the garage, shed, balcony and outdoor furniture, not just the rooms.
Access at both addresses
Stairs, lifts, long carries, narrow or steep driveways and distant parking all add handling time. This is where local knowledge matters. In Adelaide, for example, CBD and North Adelaide apartment moves are planned around timed loading zones, single goods lifts and body-corporate move-in windows, while Hills suburbs such as Blackwood and Aberfoyle Park need a check that the truck can safely get up a sloped driveway and clear low-hanging trees. Distance and timing
Within a metro area the drive between addresses is usually a small part of the bill, but peak-hour traffic through a city centre adds chargeable time. Regional and interstate quotes reflect distance, driver hours, fuel and tolls, so ask whether the quote is hourly, distance-based or fixed.
Crew and truck size
A larger truck can avoid a second trip and a third mover can cut loading time on bigger or difficult-access jobs. The lowest hourly rate is not the lowest total if the truck or crew is too small for the move.
Packing, dismantling and special items
Packing services, packing materials, complex dismantling, and heavy or fragile items such as pianos, safes and stone tables are often quoted separately. Disclose them when you request the quote rather than on moving day.
Dates
Month-ends, school holidays and popular weekends book out first. Pricing policies for those dates vary between companies, so confirm the rate for your exact date rather than assuming a surcharge or a discount.
Interstate moving costs
Interstate removals are normally priced on the route, the total cubic volume, access at both ends and whether you book a dedicated truck or a shared load (backloading). What’s The Damage puts a typical three-bedroom interstate move at $3,000–$8,000; longer routes, large inventories and dedicated vehicles can cost more. Backloading can lower the price by sharing truck space, at the cost of less flexible pickup and delivery timing. A fixed written quote should state the route, volume allowance, service type and every included charge.

How to compare removalist quotes fairly
Put every written quote against the same checklist before you look at the price:
- Crew and truck: is the vehicle and the number of movers stated?
- Billing: hourly or half-hourly increments, and what is the minimum booking?
- The clock: does chargeable time start at your door or at the depot, and when does it stop?
- Separate charges: call-out, fuel levy, tolls, stairs, long carries, heavy items, waiting time — which apply and how much?
- Inclusions: blankets, trolleys, straps and basic dismantling — included or extra?
- Additional services: packing, boxes, storage and special items — how are they priced?
